Tanzania Yellow Fever Requirements

Yellow Fever Requirements for Tanzania – What You Need to Know

We Tanzania Travel Specialist, we’re here to make your journey smooth and stress-free—from planning to arrival. One common question we get is about Yellow Fever vaccination requirements when traveling to Tanzania. The good news? For most travelers, it’s simple and straightforward.

Do I Need a Yellow Fever Vaccine to Enter Tanzania?

In most cases, you do not need a Yellow Fever vaccine to enter Tanzania. If you are traveling directly from a country without Yellow Fever risk—such as those in Europe, North America, or parts of Asia—there is no vaccination requirement. Tanzania is classified by the World Health Organization as a low-risk country, so travelers from non-risk countries can enter freely without concern.

What is Yellow Fever?

Yellow Fever is a viral illness transmitted by mosquitoes, and although rare, it can lead to serious complications in a small percentage of cases. Symptoms usually include fever, chills, headache, and muscle aches. The great news is that Tanzania is free of Yellow Fever, making it a safe destination in this regard.

When Is Yellow Fever Vaccination Required?

You’ll only need the vaccine if you are:

  • Traveling from a country with a Yellow Fever risk, or

  • Transiting through a Yellow Fever-risk country for more than 12 hours.

This includes extended layovers at airports in Yellow Fever risk zones. In such cases, you’ll need to show proof of vaccination upon arrival in Tanzania.

We recommend checking your itinerary and consulting your doctor if you’re unsure. A full list of Yellow Fever risk countries is available through the World Health Organization (WHO).

Getting Vaccinated

The Yellow Fever vaccine is a single shot that offers lifelong protection. Make sure to get it at least 10 days before travel and ask your healthcare provider for the International Certificate of Vaccination (commonly called the “yellow card”). This document is your official proof of vaccination if needed at the border.

Medical Exemptions

If your doctor recommends against the vaccine due to health reasons, don’t worry. You can still travel to Tanzania with a signed medical exemption letter. Present this to the immigration officer upon arrival, and you’ll be allowed entry without any issues.

My wife and I had an unforgettable 5-day safari in the Serengeti with K&G Tanzania, and we cannot recommend them highly enough. Everything was perfectly organized from start to finish, but what truly made our trip exceptional was our guide, **Hussein**. Hussein is simply the best—knowledgeable, patient, and incredibly skilled at spotting wildlife. He made every moment exciting and ensured we were always comfortable and well taken care of. Thanks to him, we saw the Big Five and so many other amazing animals, all while learning about Tanzania’s nature, culture, and wildlife. This was the safari of a lifetime for us, and we are deeply grateful to Hussein and the entire K&G Tanzania team. If you’re planning a safari, look no further—they will make your dream trip come true.
