The Machame Route is one of the most popular Kilimanjaro routes, known for its scenic beauty and higher summit success rate due to good acclimatization. This 7-day itinerary balances a challenging climb with gradual altitude gain, giving trekkers the best chance to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m).


Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary


Day 1: Machame Gate (1,640m) – Machame Camp (2,835m)

Arrive at Machame Gate for registration and meet your mountain crew.
Begin the trek through lush rainforest, with moss-covered trees and chances to spot colobus monkeys and exotic birds.
Arrive at Machame Camp in the afternoon for your first night on the mountain.


Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira 1 Camp (3,750m)

Leave the rainforest and climb into the heath and moorland zone. The trail opens up to stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks.
Settle at Shira 1 Camp for the night, enjoying the highland scenery.


Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)

A relatively easy day for acclimatization, crossing the Shira Plateau.
Arrive at Shira 2 Camp, with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks. Optional acclimatization hikes are available.


Day 4: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Today, trek to Lava Tower, an impressive volcanic rock formation, reaching your highest altitude so far at 4,630m.
Descend to Barranco Camp, located in a scenic valley with giant heather plants. Afternoon for rest and preparation for the Barranco Wall scramble.


Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Climb the famous Barranco Wall, a fun yet challenging scramble with guide support.
Continue trekking across alpine ridges to Karanga Camp, an essential acclimatization stop before the summit push.


Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Ascend steadily to Barafu Camp, your summit base.
Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Dinner is served early, and you are advised to get maximum rest before the climb.


Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Hotel

Summit day begins around midnight. Ascend slowly toward Stella Point (5,756m), then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After sunrise and photo opportunities, descend to Barafu Camp briefly for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.
Complete the descent to Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificate, and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
