6 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route
The Umbwe Route is the steepest and most challenging path on Mount Kilimanjaro, making it ideal for experienced climbers seeking a direct and adventurous ascent. Starting from the southern side, it passes through lush rainforest before entering moorland, alpine desert, and finally reaching the summit. Its shorter duration requires a high level of fitness and provides spectacular, less-traveled scenery.
Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,120m) – Umbwe Cave Camp (2,750m)
Your trek begins at Umbwe Gate, where you register and meet your mountain crew. The trail immediately enters dense rainforest with large trees, moss, and streams.
A steep climb leads to Umbwe Cave Camp, set at the base of the mountain’s impressive southern cliffs. This is a challenging first day and perfect for setting a strong pace for the climb.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Today is one of the toughest days. You ascend steep, rugged trails through moorland and giant heather, with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks.
Arrive at Barranco Camp, a stunning valley surrounded by cliffs. This camp offers a chance to relax, hydrate, and prepare for the Barranco Wall scramble the next day.
Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Climb the famous Barranco Wall, a fun and technical scramble. Although challenging, your guides provide full support.
After conquering the wall, trek across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, your acclimatization stop before the summit push. The views of Kibo Peak become more dramatic with each step.
Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Ascend steadily toward Barafu Camp, your high basecamp for the summit attempt. The landscape transitions to barren alpine desert, and temperatures drop significantly.
Prepare for an early dinner and rest in anticipation of the midnight summit climb.
Day 5: Barafu – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
The summit push begins around midnight. Trek slowly up steep switchbacks toward Stella Point (5,756m). Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After sunrise and celebrations, descend first to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Hotel
Complete the descent through the rainforest, enjoying the lush scenery one last time. Arrive at Mweka Gate, where you receive your Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate.
A K & G Tanzania Travel Specialist driver transfers you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for rest and a warm shower.
